2016 looks to be the year that Virtual Reality starts its true second age. After years of development in a number of areas; the maturation and increase in small form factor, low power, high speed number crunching processors has finally meshed with advances in display technology and reduction in costs to make VR a consumer ready (and affordable) technology.
Despite the many real life applications that the world of VR is now starting to be developed for (security, traffic control, pilot training, life saving surgery just to name a few) gaming has always been at the forefront of huge financial returns for technology like this - if it's done right.
With devices like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive already mainstreaming the technology for gamers, soon to be followed by the Playstation VR, we thought it appropriate to bring you a run down of what is available for the upcoming immersion revolution.
OCULUS RIFT
The Oculus Rift is possibly the most widely trumpeted of todays crop of VR system. Initially the rift was a Kickstarter project and was noted with merits by the likes of Facebook who soon acquired it. Oculus Rift is one of the most cutting edge and well designed systems you'll find anywhere.
Comprised of a sensor loaded headset with an individual display per eye and headphones that are all a tightly intergrated part of the rig the rift definitely hits the level of premium deluxe package status.
To add more granular and accurate movement detection the Rift also comes with a camera. The headset package is soon to be accompanied by the Oculus Touch controller in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2016.
The whole getup will require a fairly high-spec PC to run too, on top of a price tag of $599 it is still all in all considered a fair investment.
